Houblon is a species of flowering plant which has qualifications to be a main ingredient of many beers: impart bitterness to neutralize sweetness of maltose, Houblon extract is antimicrobial, an activity which has been exploited in preventing beer yeast from unexpected microorganism.

Houblon has been used for beer manufacture in various ways: whole cone, pellets and CO2 extract. Because pellets and CO2 extract have high quality and easy preservation so they are mainly used in the manufacture by most of beer factories.
